Thank you for this nice tutorial. I have played a bit with styles but cannot figure out how to create a clear style over a pattern. I would then apply styles to the clear layer to make it look raised, like a button with a curved glass top. I hope that is a good description! Thanks for any direction you may provide!

The bevel effect can definitely have both a sunken in and extruding look to it. Alot of people argue about what combination of inner/outer bevel/contour = whatever, but honestly I could care less what they call it. I use photoshop to make things look the way I want them to, not to be a killjoy and make sure everyone uses the correct term for something.

Inner bevels, like you said, only effects the the shape or text within the boundaries of the shape, and gives your layer a kind of "coming at you" depth. Outer bevels create a similar effect, but leave the original layer intact and create an outside bevel source similar to the way a drop shadow works, outside of the boundaries of the shape or text.

Good question by the way.

excellent tutorial.
lots of confusion out there about "bevel". Some say it makes text sunken, some say raised. some say inner plus outer bevel= embossed.

maybe it depends on the background? what is difference between inner and outer bevel other than fact that inner affects the inside pixels and outer affects the outside pixels? What do you think is the visual effect produced by each?

This is one of the best basic tutorials I have read. Nobody ever pays attention to the basics anymore, everyone just makes text effects now. Thanks for putting the time into this man.
